PROFILE
As a leading junior in the field of employment law Matthew retains expertise and experience in a wide range of employment issues varying from contentious discrimination litigation to generic human rights advisory work. He has been instructed in class actions on traditional employment disputes and in more complex equal pay cases.
Matthew regularly advises and appears in cases before Employment Tribunals and in the County Court. He has experience of appellate advocacy before the Employment Appeal Tribunal. He receives instructions from Trade Unions, Multi-National Companies, local small business and privately paying employees.
Matthew appreciates that successful litigation is oft en born out of a good working relationship with his solicitor clients and lay clients. He appreciates his role as working within a team dynamic and strives to provide a friendly service. Matthew’s litigation experience encompasses all the traditional elements of employment law. He retains a specialist interest in the following areas:
Disability Discrimination
Matthew has keen insight and relevant experience in the field of disability discrimination due to his understanding of complex medical issues inherent within his personal injury practice which complements this area very well. Matthew is confident and conversant in handling medical experts and tackling complex causation arguments.
Human Rights
A particular emphasis on discrimination against individuals through the inconsistent applications of rules or policies.
Race Discrimination
Matthew is well versed in acting both for individuals subjected to unlawful discrimination on the grounds of race and employers facing allegations of such condcut. He has acted for many clients in contentious litigation where the interpretation of complicated factual disputes are key to the potential inferences which Tribunals may draw.
Sex Discrimination
Matthew is conversant with recent developments within the constantly evolving field of employment law. He was engaged by the EOC to author case summaries on its legal website. He would be pleased to advise his solicitor clients on novel and complex points of law.
Whistleblowing
Matthew is very experienced in matters of public interest disclosure at the highest level involving cases of medical malpractice, disclosure of company secrets and significant financial impropriety.

Matthew has experience in public inquiry work having worked on the 1st phase of the Shipman Inquiry.
Matthew was a member of the British Debating Squad acting as an overseas debate coach in 2002. Matthew and his debating partner won the European Debating Championships 2001 and were ranked 6th at the World Debating Championships 2002.
