AREAS OF PRACTICE

Mr Bassano specialises in criminal law and is frequently instructed in cases involving:

  • murder, attempted murder, manslaughter and causing death by dangerous driving;
  • armed robbery;
  • rape and sexual assaults;
  • serious violence and large scale public disorder;
  • large scale drug trafficking;
  • offences under the Firearms Act.

He also practices in areas of law including the civil jurisdiction of the Magistrates Court such as Anti-Social Behaviour Orders, Football Banning Orders and Orders under the Sexual Off ences Act 2003 and the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

He often conducts cases with Leading Counsel and has acted as a Leading Junior Counsel.

He has appeared before the Appellate Courts on numerous occasions, in particular the Court of Appeal and Divisional Court. Two notable and recent cases in which he appeared before the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) are R v Edwards and Others (2005) 149 SJ 835 (concerning the bad character provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 2003) and R v Brown and Butterworth [2006] EWCA Crim 1996 (concerning the new sentencing provisions of the 2003 Act).

He is a member of the Criminal Bar Association and understands the importance of studying the effects of recent and on-going changes to the law governing evidence, procedure and sentence.
